OK. I still don't like the lockin policy. I find it horribly objectionable.
But I got a chance to play with an iPhone this weekend, a good 10 minutes of lustworthy exploration.
Yeah, the edge network is sucky, but it is sufficient for a lot of work.
Yeah, the lockin policy is repulsively crippling.
But the thing is so well done, so well put together, so easy to use, with all the little touches, that if I didn't have 7 months to go on my cellphone contract, I'd go out and buy one today.
I'll still probably wait (I don't want to spend an extra $150 bucks to get out of my cellphone contract), but the iPhone looks seriously worth it.

If your contract is with Cingular, they'll waive the fee.
Cingular is AT&T.
I don't have AT&T, so I either have to wait or shell out $150. :(
I've never made any use of my cell phone beyond making and receiving calls -- never cared to until I started lusting after the iPhone. However, I've got to admit I have the same problem: if I were to make use of phone applications, I'd want to be able to develop my own as well. We'll see if the iPhone's appeal can ultimately supersede those instincts...
a Nokia E90 is much more nerdy than the iPhone actually, and it has 3G, a regular keyboard, and a biggish wide screen. An HTC Universal (which is what I have) is also very nerdy, with the only problem that it isn't widescreen. I'm not sure how iPhone has got so much hype, considering its competition. Perhaps someone who likes the iPhone can tell me why it's better than the E90 or the Universal? My theory is that Apple products appeal to people who place too much emphasis on making their gadgets distinctly visible, while those who care more for the technology inside and its usefulness in increasing productivity will probably prefer other products.
Because the iPhone is simply more usable for a standard human.
This is the genius of Apple's products: the user interface is orders of magnitude better than anything else currently out there.
EG, web surfing. There is just enough stickyness on the scrolling that things line up, that you can get the column widths right, etc, without even thinking about it.
